If you are thinking of dissolving your marriage or civil partnership, you need to be aware that ‘no fault’ divorce is due to become law.

You will no longer have to wait five years, or live apart for two, or blame your spouse for adultery, unreasonable behaviour or desertion.

Instead, if you both agree to divorce, you will be able to make a joint application or submit a statement of irretrievable breakdown. It will then take at least six months from your petition to the Decree Absolute. What’s more, a spouse will be unable to contest any application for divorce.

No date has yet been set for the change.
